- Abstract
This article proposes a new approach to the question of the role of culture in the failure of ERP implementation projects. This approach, called "negotiated culture", asserts the dynamic and evolving nature of cultures as opposed to a deterministic vision. It calls for creating an environment in which a common culture may emerge between people of different cultures in the interest of fulfilling their common objectives. The concept of negotiated culture offers interesting prospects for ERP project management, as it treats cultural differences as sources of opportunity rather than sources of trouble. Using the methodology of the Socio-Economic Approach to Management developed by the ISEOR Research Center, we analyze the case of a successful turnaround of a failing ERP project at an advanced stage of post-implementation, and show how the ERP project managers were able to facilitate the emergence of a culture common to all participants, thereby improving the chances of the users' appropriation and use.
