- Title
MP wants tobacco-style ban on fossil fuel ads.
- Authors
Alcoba, Natalie
- Abstract
A proposed Fossil Fuel Advertising Act in Canada aims to ban ads that promote fossil fuels in a misleading or environmentally friendly way. The bill connects the massive advertising budgets of oil and gas companies to the issue of human health, citing air pollution caused by fossil fuels as a major cause of premature deaths and various illnesses. The bill would also prohibit the promotion of fossil fuels as beneficial for Indigenous Peoples or as less harmful than other fossil fuels. The idea for the bill came from the medical community, and while private member's bills rarely pass, it aims to spark a conversation about the misrepresentation and lies of the oil and gas industry.
