- Title
Los Juegos Panamericanos: piñata de clase mundial.

- Abstract
Different circumstances raised fears that Guadalajara would fail to pull off this event. But the Games were a big success, and we projected a flattering image of Mexico. Now the adrenaline has subsided, and I'm left with the sensation that what Guadalajara organized was a piñata--shiny and eye-catching while it lasted, but ultimately fleeting. Other cities have used these events to build lasting infrastructure that meets real long-term needs. In our case, after the athletes left it was discovered that the Pan American Village had dumped raw sewage on the ground, and now that Village is being commercialized as Villa Bosque, an upscale residential area. Guadalajara is set amid landscapes that would make any world-class city envious. I'd love to see my adopted city picked up on the radar of urban cognoscenti, yet it seems determined to trash its most valuable assets.
