- Abstract
The article discusses Spanish colonialist Gaspar Castaño de Sosa, lieutenant governor of Nuevo Reino de León in New Spain. In 1579, King Philip II of Spain granted the territory of Nuevo Reino de León to Luis de Carvajal, which included what is now part of New Mexico. Carvajal had issues with the viceroy of New Spain, the Marquis of Villamanrique, which resulted in his imprisonment. Viceroy Luis de Velasco II replaced Villamanrique, but continued to persecute the settlers of Nuevo Reino de León residing in the village of Almadén. The author considers letters sent by Velasco to Philip II outlining his charges against Castaño. Castaño's expedition in New Mexico and his subsequent arrest are detailed.
