- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of sound archives. It is stated that sound archives serve an important role in preserving rare recordings for use in the future. The items kept in them may be valuable for academic studies of languages or cultural forms which have been lost or are changing. They may be also be used by the people recorded, accessed out of personal interest or for study and reference on old or forgotten knowledge. Despite the significance of keeping and preserving recordings for the future, the archivist is faced with an ethical dilemma in regards to rights.
