This article examines the history of talk about joy, moving backward from its current corruption to its resplendent heritage in European and American culture. This history informs "American Beauty" both a culturally important and remarkably beautiful film. It is at once an indictment of joylessness and, more interestingly, the blossoming of a fresh type of Romantic joy.
