- Abstract
This article recounts the itinerary of a forgotten religious devotion. From 1845 to 2005, many Montreal Catholics venerated in their cathedral the relics of saint Zoticus. The remains of this mysterious saint came from the catacombs of Rome. Promoted by the clergy, the devotion to saint Zoticus was not restricted to the realm of public devotions but was adopted as an integral element of the private devotional world of many Catholics. In looking at the particular example of saint Zoticus, this article reveals the keen interest that existed for relics of catacomb saints in Quebec. The religious fervor surrounding these relics constituted one of the distinctive expressions of ultramontane piety.
