- Abstract
Some Nigerian youths have lost the savor that marriage is a union of a man and a woman in a lifelong partnership. A good number of Nigerian young married couples are no longer attuned to the tenets of Christian marriage: they see nothing wrong with divorce and re-marriage, out-of-marriage childbearing (baby mamas and daddies) and sexualization of marriage. Beginning with an exposé of the nature and properties of marriage, this paper investigates this growing trends of resentment to marriage among Nigerian youth. Using interviews and data analysis, the essay interrogates both the areas and causes of resentment to marriage. It connects some of these growing trends of resentment to the influence of the web of social interactions with celebrities which the internet makes available. It further argued that loss of family identity and contemporary notion of freedom leading to growing demand for personal space are contributory factors. To address these resentments, collaboration with knights and ladies who are veterans in marriage and defense of faith is essential. There is need for re-orientation of the thinking of Nigerian youth about marriage founded on the dignity of unbreakable oneness between husband and wife who mutually bestow and accept each other.
