- Abstract
Caricature is the art of telling the events through drawing by including the element of humor. At the same time, the caricature was used as a communication tool, making people laugh and think with the messages it gave. Humor is accepted as an element of comedy. The history of cartoons goes back to ancient times. From the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, examples of cartoons have been encountered in the Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek and Roman periods. In Turkey, after the Tanzimat period, the caricature began to take place as an element of humor with the proliferation of newspapers and magazines, which were accepted as mass media, and cartoonists were trained. One of the cartoonists in question is Ramiz Gökçe. Ramiz Gökçe drew cartoons for the Cartoon Magazine during the Second World War. The Second World War was also reflected in the cartoons of the period. In the cartoons drawn by Ramiz Gökçe in the Cartoon Magazine, the political, military and economic situations of the Axis and Allied States during the war, and the political and economic situation of Turkey in this period were the main subjects. In particular, the "Site of Life" policy implemented by Germany and the expansionist policy adopted by Italy were one of the most frequently mentioned subjects in the cartoons. He also took part in cartoons in the totalitarian understanding of the Axis Powers. On the other hand, the democratic understanding of the Allied Powers and their struggle against totalitarian states were among the subjects in the cartoons. In the current cartoons, the situation of the states in the Second World War took place as an element of humor, while at the same time it made us think. The purpose of this article is to examine and evaluate the Second World War through cartoons.
