- Abstract
The article presents a case study concerning labor unrest, strikes, and the formation of mining unions in Moengo, Suriname, a bauxite mining town, in 1941 and 1942. It explores relations between the Surinamese Bauxite Company, the workforce, and the state, analyzing socio-political alliances. Other topics include economic and political conditions in Suriname in the 1930s, the Surinaamse Staten, or local parliament, and the power of organized labour.
