- Abstract
Medieval to modern pottery from the deserted villages of Prochod and Žďár in the Velechvín forest district and the issue of dating the decline of settlement on the basis of the pollen record. The contribution deals with the issue of dating the deserted villages of Prochod and Žďár in the Velechvín forest district, located not far from České Budějovice, on the basis of analysis of high and late medieval pottery which has been recovered through surface collection and small-scale sampling surveys over several recent years. In the case of the village of Prochod, the testimony of ceramic finds contradicts written sources. The village was first mentioned in 1373, but the surface collection assemblages predominantly contain 13th century potsherds which seems to be indicative of earlier origins. Radiocarbon dating of the pollen profile from the water reservoir also points to an earlier development phase of the local settlement manifesting itself through deforestation of the landscape in the course of the 13th and 14th centuries. The absence of late medieval, 15th century potsherds is rather surprising, as there are a number of written entries about the village's owners for that period. In the case of the other village, Žďár, late medieval to early modern potsherds are present, which corresponds to historical data from the Urbarium of the Hluboká estate from 1490.
