- Abstract
Proceeding from sociological, economic, philosophical and theological analysis of the contemporary social and cultural situation, the article outlines the Western condition as characterized by two processes that concern also the Christian community: desocialization and detraditionalization. These processes are effects of a deep-rooted individualism. What about the relationship between faith and social bond? The theology of gift elaborated by John Milbank is a viable and challenging answer for the Church in a post-secular society. Rooted in the Trinitarian mystery and developed through the Theo-ontological device of participation, Milbank’s conception of a “purified gift-exchange” (agape) is a Christian interpretation of Marcel Mauss’s work on the agonistic gift. The Church, living as such, can contribute to re-generation of social bond by evoking a socialism by grace.
