- Abstract
The article explores the mystery and truth hidden behind the society of Amazon women as imagined in Renaissance texts. Topics discussed are depiction of Amazon women in ancient stories like "Alexander Romance," sexual customs of the Amazons, the belief that Amazon girls remove one breast in order to wield their weapons more effectively during war to defend their territory, and portrayal of Amazons as figures of sexual freedom and exoticism such as in the play "The Sea Voyage."
