- Abstract
The paper aims to investigate Vittoria Colonna’s contemporaries receptive and re-elaborative characteristics of a peculiar aspect of her poems: the neoplatonic reuse of the topical of descending splendor – topical perceived in the contemporary milieu as not dissimilar from Christian thought. The first testimony is represented by Rinaldo Corso commentary on Colonna’s spiritual poems, relevant as the first proof of exegesis of a living author, as well as a social witnessing of literary tastes and contemporary stylistic trends. The second testimony of the methods of reception and reworking of some philosophical aspects of Colonna’s poetry can be found in manuscript 897 of the Casanatense Library in Rome (= Cas1 according to Bullock’s edition). The manuscript, of undoubted historical and cultural interest, bears the signs of a dense censorship activity repeated several times by a copyist who probably came from the Sienese environment. Only some interesting textual variants of the manuscript will be considered, linked to certain philosophical semantic areas.
