- Abstract
The systematic analysis of bioarchaeological records is one of the most important innovations to have taken place within Medieval Archaeology in Southern Europe in the last few years. Unlike in other European research areas, such as British Medieval Archaeology, Mediterranean Historical Archaeology did not develop an academic, theoretical and methodological background that encouraged the study of the biofact. Indeed, ecofacts were often considered of only secondary importance in archaeological research, compared to artefacts. The occasion of the 40-year anniversary of the journal Archeologia Medievale. Cultura Materiale Insediamenti, Territorio provides the opportunity for a brief discussion of the role of bioarchaeological analysis in the study of Italian, and more generally southern European, medieval societies over the last few decades. This paper discusses the bibliometric impact of the journal Archeologia Medievale and of the conference proceedings of the Society of Italian Medieval Archaeologists in relation to the study of biofacts and ecofacts. The analysis of the late development of these research areas takes into account theoretical approaches, historical paradigms and the organization of universities and research institutes. The paper concludes with the recommendation of a number of topics that would benefit from further study.
