In this article I outline the necessary conditions for viewing the caesura and demonstrate how viewing the model as a metaphor for the clinical encounter can be orienting in the attempt to transend/penetrate the forces that resist change. Clinical examples illustrate penetration and transcendence in the caesural territory. I suggest that the caesura as a model is a unifying concept in Bion's work.
