- Abstract
This article presents information on Corynebacterium betae, the causal organism of silvering disease of red beet. Silvering disease of red beet, Beta vulgaris, was first recorded in Great Britain in 1945 on a seed crop of the variety Cheltenham Green Top. Since that time it has occurred in many seed crops of this variety, causing the loss of up to 75% of the plants on some farms. The disease has also been seen on the variety Detroit and has been experimentally induced on other beet varieties, including sugar beet, and on mangolds, but it is at present of economic importance only on the variety Cheltenham Green Top. Corynebacterium betae, is a short, gram-positive rod which is motile when freshly isolated, and bears three peritrichous flagella.
