A case study is presented that focuses on the 1895 murder of Crawfordsville, Oregon residents John Montgomery and his wife, Elizabeth Montgomery, who were murdered by their son Loyd Montgomery. It notes that Loyd also killed a local businessman named Daniel McKercher. The author explores public opinion and considers factors including gender relations, family relations, and social and economic aspects of the agrarian crisis of the 1880s and 1890s in Oregon's Willamette Valley.
