- Abstract
The aim of this qualitative study is to describe parents' and government authorities' perceptions of joint physical custody (JPC) and its principles. The data consists of interviews (14) of parents with JPC arrangements and family custody reports done by social welfare officers in request of district courts. Phenomenography is used as a methodological framework. Following the research findings, three categories of description emerge from the data. The first one is the preservation of the family ideal, where both parents as well as authorities emphasize amicability and equality between parents, comparing these features to those of an intact nuclear family. The second one concerns children's living conditions, where perceptions between parents and authorities diff er on the suitable age for a child to live in JPC as well as on the significance of distances between parents' homes for JPC. The third category tackles the everyday arrangements of separated families, including parents' different perceptions on private and public methods of arranging JPC.
