- Abstract
This article focuses on the torture of Iraqi prisoners. The behavior the photographs from Abu Ghraib prison document is bad. The photographs have appeared on the front pages of countless newspapers and magazines in East and West, and on innumerable Web sites and television programs. In the American press, there are two schools of explanation for how and why American soldiers came to torture Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib, and how and why they came to photograph the torture. The first explanation is political. In this view, the abuses stemmed directly from a series of extra-legal findings of U.S. President George Bush administration after September 11, 2001, and from the interrogation tactics those findings either allowed or encouraged.
