Schmidt and Stakhanov: Work Heroes in Two Systems.
- Authors
Nadworny, Milton J.
- Abstract
The article profiles and contrasts historic work heroes. A U.S. man, identified as "Schmidt" and later as Henry Knolle, served as a minor symbol of the scientific management movement. Russian work hero Alexei Stahkanov gained significant attention by achieving a production record. Schmidt was essentially a product of the work of Frederick W. Taylor. Taylor is known as the recognized leader of scientific management and wrote the book "The Principles of Scientific Management." Stahkanov was a coal miner in the Soviet Union. In 1935 he cut 102 tons of coal in one shift, almost 15 times the "normal" output. As a credit to his work the term "Stakhanovite" became a specific honor for workers.
