- Abstract
The article discusses a study suggesting that dietary restriction (DR) increases lifespan in all species which is explained by the adaptive energy reallocation from reproduction to maintenance of the organism. It notes a separate study arguing that most species cannot expect to live long in the wild due to high extrinsic mortality and suggests that DR decreases it capacity to survive cold, injury and infection. The study also argued no adaptive trade-off between maintenance and reproduction.
