- Abstract
Objective :To study on the antifungal and antibacterial activities of the Eucalyptus and Basil Leaves Methods;A comparative study on the antifungal and antibacterial activities of the crude water extracts of the leaves of these plants was carried out using agar well diffusion method. Results:The study indicated that the extract of the leaves of Eucalyptus was very active against candida albicans at 25mg/ml, but has no activity with staphylococcus aureus at the same concentration. The extract of Basil leaves was very active against staphylococcus aureus at 25mg/ml, but has little activity against candida albicans at the same concentration. The phytochemical screening of the extract of Eucalyptus leaves indicated the presence of flavonoids, while the extract of Basil leaves indicated the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, carbohydrates and terpenoids. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the crude extracts were determined for the various organisms which ranged between 0.01 and 2.5mg/ml,while the minimum bactericidal concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration ranged between 0.02 and 2.5mg/ml,and 0.01 and 2.0mg/ml respectively. Conclusion :The Eucalyptus crude water extracts offer a potential antifungal property against candida albicans while Basil offers a potential antibacterial property against staphylococcus aureus.
