Teachers' Dispositions: One Collegiate Journey.
- Authors
Miller, Melinda S.; Maninger, Robert M.
- Abstract
One university in East Texas was given the charge of creating an instrument to measure teacher candidates' dispositions as a part of preparation for an NCATE accreditation visit. A Dispositions Committee was formed to determine which dispositions were important for preservice teachers to possess. The committee members then created a rubric to measure the dispositions and decided the point in the assessment system at which the dispositions should be measured. In addition, the committee examined dispositions rubrics from other NCATE accredited universities and created a set of standards and indicators designed to measure the extent to which preservice teachers had the dispositions necessary to be a teacher. The dispositions document continues to evolve as faculty members take on the responsibility of helping candidates to become the best possible teachers they can be-teachers described by students as their favorites.
