- Abstract
The article discusses advancements and challenges in pancreatic islet transplantation, specifically focusing on insights from the Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry (CITR). The CITR was established in 2001 and has played a crucial role in aggregating data on islet transplantation from over 39 centers across 10 countries. The article highlights three pivotal studies from the CITR, including one that identifies four factors associated with favorable long-term outcomes in islet transplant recipients. Another study explores the correlation between clinical outcomes and C-peptide levels, suggesting that retention of C-peptide function should be a goal of islet transplantation. The third study introduces the primary graft function (PGF) as an indicator for predicting the success rate of transplantation. The article emphasizes the need for meticulous preparation and post-transplant management to achieve successful islet transplantation. It also acknowledges that there is still room for improvement in the field. The article concludes by discussing the potential use of the BETA-2 score, measured at 28 days after transplantation, as a tool for guiding re-transplantation decisions and the importance of further research in this area.
