- Abstract
The aims of this study were to provide baseline knowledge about intestinal parasites in house rats (Rattus rattus) that inhabit the Dehradun area, and to analyze the associations among helminthes. The present study was undertaken during the six month period (April2011 to October20 11).Of 120 rats 62.5% rats were infected out of which 63.6% males and 61.5% females. The results revealed that following nematodes were dominant with theirrespective prevalence: Trichuris muris (18%), Syphacia muris(11.7%), and Strongylus sp. (8.3%). Flukes, Cestoda and Trematoda were not recorded. Juveniles of Syphacia muris and Strongylus species were higher in record of all examined infected rats. 45 (60%) rats were found to harbor at one parasite species with higher prevalence in male hosts. There was sex related difference in the prevalence of infection with individual helminthes species. Multiple infections occurred with up to two species per rat showing different combinations of parasitic infections. This is the first record of the gastro intestinal helminthes fauna of rats in Dehradun.
