- Abstract
In the book "War and Memory at the Time of the Fifth Crusade" by Megan Cassidy-Welch, the culture of remembrance surrounding the fifth crusade is examined. The author argues that memory played a central role for the crusaders in justifying their religious and military actions. The book is based on a variety of sources, including eyewitness accounts, documents, and testaments. Objects such as the mitre of Jakob von Vitry and a portable altar are also examined as part of the culture of remembrance. Although the connection to the main theme is not always convincing, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the sources on the fifth crusade.
