- Abstract
The article looks into the history, current state and future of death penalty system in South Carolina. It identifies limitations on death penalty set by the Supreme Court and presents data on death sentences and executions since 1976, lack of reliability by exonerations, arbitrariness of death penalty based on race, gender, crime location and statutory aggravating circumstances, as well as excessively long periods of time that individuals spend on death row and decline in use of death penalty.
