The author comments on the role of health professionals in remembering and correctly pronouncing the names of their patients, particularly when they are from an unfamiliar culture, or when they are hard to pronounce. The author argues that it is the responsibility of health professionals to be nominally competent in remembering the names of their patients and suggests five ways to achieve nominal competence.
