The authors addresses considerations relevant to determine laboratory determination of hemoglobin A1c as a means for monitoring diabetes control. Topics covered include the significance of HbA1c in monitoring the response of diabetics to therapy, the commercial availability and standardization of results among laboratories and the technical and clinical issues influencing HbA1c measurement that may affect its ability to reflect blood glucose control.
