- Abstract
Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) has a long history of use in cooking and in traditional medicine. In Europe, it has been used to treat mild dyspepsia, hyperhidrosis, age-related cognitive disorders, and inflammation of the throat and skin. Modern research has confirmed the legitimacy of the traditional use of sage, and also revealed a wide range of pharmacological effects of its active compounds, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antimutagenic, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. The active group of sage herb components are: essential oil containing borneol, camphor, caryophyllene, 1,8-cineole, elemene, humulene, pinene and β-and β-thujone, as well as polyphenolic compounds: phenolic acids and flavonoids, and terpene compounds.
