- Abstract
Water is a scarce natural resource, thus its quality should be protected, defended, managed and treated accordingly. Surface waters in particular are renewable resources with a limited capacity to recover from adverse impacts from human activities. Ocna Sibiului's lakes show a high healing potential, both through the waters and the mud that has therapeutic property. The risk of fall ill or of infection associated to the swimming pools and to the balneary water is connected with the water's contamination with faecal impurities. The faecal contamination may caused by the people who take a bath or by the sources of contaminated water. This study brings forward the results of bacteriological researches of water in the salty lakes of Ocna Sibiului. The research was made before and within the bathing season testing water samples taken from thirteen lakes. The water samples were drew from the following salty lakes of Ocna Sibiului: The Black Lake, Brancoveanu Lake, Bottomless Lake, Ocnita Lake, The Mine's Mouth Lake, Closca Lake, Horia Lake, Crisan Lake, The Mud Lake, Cats Lake, Swallow Lake, Linnen Lake, The Lake with insland. Some of the monitored lakes are used for treatment and bathing purposes, some of them are still not explored for any purposes. Many waterborne pathogens are difficult to detect and quantify and specific methodology to detect them in environmental water samples has still to be developed (Borrego, 1994). So, the bacteriological monitoring was directed towards faecal indicators. In order to establish the bacteriological level pollution and that of measuring the epidemiological hazard there have been determined with MPN technique, the following parameters: total coliforms, thermotolerant coliforms, Escherichia coli and enteroccoci. Most Probable Number (MPN) analysis is a statistical method based on the random dispersion of microorganisms per volume in a given sample. The samples water from six lakes was analysis with biochemical tests API 20 E. This is a standardized identification system for Enterobacteriaceae and other non-fastidious, gram-negative rods which uses miniaturized biochemical tests. The organisms identify with this system was Klebsiella strains, Escherichia, Enterobacter, Salmonella, Citrobacter strains. The obtained results prove that the faecal impurity of water has been influenced by the season, the chemical characteristics, number of persons bathing in the lakes and thus using them for therapeutic treatment.
