- Abstract
"International Energy Contracts—the Common Law and the Civil Law Approach to Joint Ventures and Farmouts" is a bilingual book written by Francisco Romano and Peter Roberts. It provides a comparative law perspective on Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs) and farm-outs in the energy industry. The book covers the fundamentals of JOAs and farm-outs, as well as their specificities in unitization agreements and unconventional hydrocarbon projects. It explains complex concepts in an easily understandable manner and offers examples and explanations on how provisions drafted for common law jurisdictions may clash with civil law principles. The book is timely, considering the recent publication of the 2023 version of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN) Model JOA, which the authors were involved in drafting. It is worth noting that the book was written simultaneously in Spanish and English, making it accessible to readers in both languages. Overall, this book is a valuable resource for those interested in international energy contracts and offers insights from two experienced practitioners in the field.
