- Abstract
Gender and sexual minority youth face greater risk than both their heterosexual and cisgender peers and other members of the GSM community, including higher rates of psychological distress and suicidal thoughts and attempts. Enacted stigma is a major risk factor for suicidality in this group. Protective factors include social support through key relationships, increasing access to GSM-affirmative health care experiences, and programmatic support to reduce bullying, harassment, discrimination, and violence. Understanding and reducing microaggressions and providing microaffirmations in health care settings can serve as protective factors. New data from an adolescent partial hospitalization program are presented in this article to support these recommendations. Health care providers are urged to educate themselves thoroughly about the needs of GSM youth, provide trauma-informed care, educate staff, modify health records to be more inclusive, and advocate for systemic change to support GSM people.
