- Abstract
This essay investigates the permanence of the Genoese milieu in the new Bourbon Spain, taking into consideration this theme under the profile of the naval politics of the new dynasty. The rise to the Spain throne of the Bourbons marked a new and important phase in the history of the Spanish Navy, which returned to be one of the principal European fleets after the eclipse due to the War of Succession vicissitudes. In this context, a symbolic figure was that of Stefano De Mari, belonging to one of the most influential families of the Genoese nobility, who had a career of great relevance in the Spanish Navy of the first halves of the Eighteenth century. The start of this career was determined by the asiento gotten in 1713 to participate to the blockade of Barcelona, which had refused to bend to the authority of Phillip V. Unlike the traditional Genoese naval asientos, that of Stefano De Mari concerned sailing warships and not oaring vessels, underlining as Genoa was also able to supply this type of naval resources. The particular historical moment, the achievement of the asiento and the abilities of De Mari of succeeding in the client network of the new Bourbon monarchy, allowed the Genoese patrician to brilliantly start its naval career, transforming himself from asentista to a commissioned high officer of the new Spanish Navy.
