- Abstract
We describe a new species of chigger of the genus Polylopadium Brennan and Jones, 1961 (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Trombiculidae) parasitic on the Mexican agouti (Dasyprocta mexicana Saussure, 1860) from Los Tuxtlas Tropical Biology Station, Veracruz, Mexico. The new species can be separated from other species in the genus for a combination of characters as: presence of 15 dorsal platelets without setae and separated from scutum, scutum lacking anteromedian protuberance, a pair of eyes on the scutum, a pair of sternal setae, two genualae I, one genuala II-III and coxae I-III with one B seta. An updated identification key for the species in the genus Polylopadium is included. This is the thirteenth species of Polylopadium, the first recorded for Mexico, and the first confirmed record of a Trombiculidae parasitizing Dasyprocta mexicana.
