- Abstract
Alair Gomes is an exponent of Brazilian photography. His extensive work, produced between the 1960s and 1990s, is part of the collection of important institutions, recognized, among other things, for its pioneering approach to homoeroticism. He dedicated attention to sports and gymnastics, themes not identified as emerging and recurrent in other contemporary national artists. This article aims to discuss the representations of masculinities expressed in one of his series - Sonatinas, four feet, carried out from 1966 onwards, deposited at the National Library of Rio de Janeiro. We look especially for two sequences in which men are exercising on the beach. What caught our attention was how bodily practices, a field in which, in general, heteronormativity is consolidated, were mobilized to destabilize certain hegemonic understandings, and present new meanings of the use of the body, and the exercise of sexuality.
