A tribute to gay and lesbian rights activist Barbara Gittings is presented. Gittings' work helped to shape the gay and lesbian rights movement in the United States. Gittings' began to research the subject of same-sex love in her teens. Her involvement with the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), two gay rights groups, is mentioned. She started a chapter of the DOB on the East Coast, and became editor of their magazine, "The Ladder." She took part in gay and lesbian civil rights demonstrations. Gittings helped to promote gay acceptance in the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and was instrumental in their removing homosexuality from their list of mental disorders.
