- Abstract
Chinese emperor Yongzheng (r. 1722-35) had a passion for pictures and paintings. During his reign, he ordered much of his daily life to be recorded in paintings. This article analyzes three ceremonial paintings depicting offerings to the Xiannong Alter, that is, to the God of Agriculture. Yongzheng was well known for basing his ruling strategy on agriculture. The article describes the contents of these paintings and explains agricultural policy under Yongzheng. Timelines and political backgrounds are also explored. The article concludes that Yongzheng used agricultural policy and ceremonies to gain political power and reinforce his reign.
