- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the African American community of Vermont during the antebellum period. Introductory details are given highlighting the minority status of African Americans in the rural north and multiple questions are raised regarding their demographic and social conditions. Focus is given to the communities of Addison County, Charlotte, and Hinesburgh. Statistics are offered addressing topics such as population size, occupations, and property ownership. Separate statistics are given comparing enslaved African Americans to freedmen.
