- Abstract
Pneumatic systems are extensively used in industries for manufacturing, packaging, processing, palletizing, stamping, embossing as well as in industrial automation. They offer various advantages such as lower cost, easier maintenance, availability of working medium -- compressed air, as well as improved operational safety and are uncomplicated to design. The pneumatic systems exhibit significant non-linearity due to the dynamics of the pressure inside the pneumatic cylinder, fluctuations in the frictional force, and compressed air flow rates through the valves. The nonlinear nature of pneumatic systems affects the process dynamics significantly. There is a tremendous increase in applications requiring accurate position control of pneumatic cylinders. The main challenge is obtaining high positioning accuracy, improving the response time and reducing the error in displacement. In this review, an analysis of various techniques involved in positioning control for pneumatic systems is carried out. The reviewed techniques have been classified according to their way of operation in reference to 46 research papers.
