- Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has revolutionized the field of orthodontics over the last few years and currently presents a new era in computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) production. Digitalization is steadily increasing in the field of dentistry, from individual patient cases in which 3D prints of intraoral scans are used to create plaster casts to the full digitalization of a practice's organization. The use of 3D-planned templates can provide many advantages, in particular during the insertion of miniscrews for skeletal anchorage. Anatomically important structures can be visualized in detail and taken into account during further planning. Compared with other current methods, a computer-designed and 3D-printed drilling template offers increased safety to correctly insert a miniscrew while minimizing iatrogenic damage and helping to identify an adequate implant site. This clinical case elaborates and critically discusses this process.
