- Abstract
The article discusses the discovery of a collection of long-forgotten orchestral charts belonging to Herman Kenin, a Portland orchestra conductor and labor leader. The collection, found in the attic of the American Federation of Musicians office, has sparked interest in preserving and performing music from the Kenin Archive. Kenin, who was also the president of the AFM, played a significant role in reshaping the union and enforcing civil rights in the music industry. The collection, consisting of 250,000 pages of fully orchestrated sheet music dating from 1880 to 1955, is being sorted and digitally archived by Sammuel Murry-Hawkins. The Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra is using the Kenin Archive to perform live music from that era and attract younger audiences to the genre. The orchestra hopes to secure a permanent facility to house the archive and continue preserving and performing Kenin's collection for years to come.
