- Abstract
The article discusses the constitutional right to counsel in America in relation to the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's (USSC's) ruling in the case Gideon v. Wainwright. The development of professional standards for criminal defense attorneys is mentioned, along with the roles of nonlawyers as guardians of the right to counsel. The collateral consequences doctrine is addressed, along with the USSC case Padilla v. Kentucky and indigent defense reform efforts.
