- Title
THE MADWOMAN SPEAKS: MADNESS AND MOTHERHOOD IN ANGIE CRUZ'S SOLEDAD.
- Authors
HERRERA, CRISTINA
- Abstract
A literary criticism of Angie Cruz's "Soledad" is presented. It explores a mode of reading for "Soledad" through his narration of mad mother Olivia whose silent speech is classified as speech. It notes how his narration of the novel gives Olivia an opportunity to speak in dreamlike sequences where readers hear her complex but coherent inner thoughts. It refers to "Soledad" as an example of a madwoman speaking her madness from the perspective of working-class Latina mad mother and her daughter.
