- Authors
Perucci, Tony
- Abstract
This article discusses the controversies surrounding African-American singer and activist Paul Robeson including his psychoanalytic practice. Special hearings were held by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in order to give members of Robeson's race the privilege of the expression of contrary views to the disloyal and unpatriotic statements. The 1949 comments made by Robeson have initiated a decade of continuous U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) surveillance, mob violence and blacklisting. It highlights the book "The Fifty-Minute Hour" by psychoanalyst Robert Lindner in which he talked about Communism which is said to be an expression of neurosis to be cured by psychoanalysis.
