- Title
Hedda Gabler's Boredom.
- Authors
Smidt, Kristian
- Abstract
The article discusses the boredom of the title character of Henrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" and compares Hedda's situation to that of Lady Dedlock in Charles Dickens's "Bleak House." Both women make marriages of convenience to unexciting men when left without financial support and end up existentially bored. Both characters also have hidden romantic backgrounds, feel threatened by inquisitive lawyers and end their lives. The article concludes that Ibsen likely read Ludvig Moltke's translation of "Bleak House" and took inspiration from it for "Hedda Gabler."
