An essay is presented on the history of stage lighting, which appeared in the Theatre Library Association's "Performing Arts Resources #25: Documenting Lighting Design" published in 2007. Topics discussed include use of stage lighting since the origin of theatre in acts of tale-telling; use of stage lighting during the Renaissance to enhance dramatic effects; how advent of gas lighting changed theatrical production; and installation of electric lights in 1881 at Savoy Theatre, London, England.
