- Title
THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THE `LAKE SCHOOL' IDEA.
- Authors
Chandler, David
- Abstract
The article presents information about early development of the "Lake School" in poetry. In the early 1800s there was a "Lake School" of poets and this school was first identified and attacked by author Francis Jeffrey, in the initial number of the "Edinburgh Review," in 1802. Such at least is the claim made in numerous books and articles on the Romantic period. The first part of the assertion carries some weight. This is the first instance of the new school of poets being specifically associated with the Lake District, England and is almost certainly the source of the "Lake School" terminology, although even in this 1807 review Jeffrey does not yet use it himself.
