- Abstract
The article focuses on Book II, Canto V, of William Davenant's "Gondibert" in which Gondibert and his companions are conducted through the House of Astragon. Astragon's dwelling is composed of a series of academies in which the scientific study of the natural world is encouraged. In the course of their tour through the various galleries and buildings, the visitors are shown the "Cabinet of Death." A number of possible sources for the House of Astragon have been proposed.
